Why does my Thunderbolt 3 device no work with the Lenovo P50 or P70 laptop?

We've had some reports that the Thunderbolt 3 device is not recognized properly on the Lenovo P50 or P70. Changing the BIOS settings for the graphics device from "Discrete Graphics" to "Hybrid Graphics" appears to solve this problem.
